My History With Anantara – All the Way Back to 1998

I’ve always had a soft spot for Anantara Hua Hin. My first experience with the hotel dates back to 1998, when I was working as a tour guide and living in Bangkok. My parents were visiting and had joined a 14-day round trip I was running for a Danish group in Vietnam.

After the trip, they spent their last week in Hua Hin, and I came down from Bangkok to visit them.

Back then, the hotel was called Royal Garden Village – and I still remember how it felt walking through the lush garden for the first time, with the small villas tucked between the palm trees. It felt like a true oasis. Not flashy, not artificial – just calm, authentic, and beautiful.

In 2001, the hotel changed its name and ownership, becoming the first property in what we now know as Anantara Hotels & Resorts – a Thai brand that today has over 60 properties in more than 25 countries.

That it all started right here in Hua Hin just makes even more sense to me.

Our Wedding Night in a Tropical Paradise

On March 1st, 2007, my Thai wife and I spent our wedding night at Anantara Hua Hin. And yes – we had arranged a babysitter for our 18-month-old son, Oskar. ?

After a long, unforgettable wedding celebration, we arrived late in the evening – exhausted, happy, and full of emotion. And then we were welcomed by something that made the moment even more magical: the room was decorated with flowers everywhere. On the bed, in the bathroom, and in small details we only noticed bit by bit.

It was tasteful, romantic – and 100% Thai.

Anantara Seaview

We sat on the terrace overlooking the garden and the sea, listened to the cicadas, and just soaked it all in. That experience stayed with us, and it’s one of the reasons we’ve returned again and again – both as a couple and as a family.

What Makes Anantara Hua Hin Special?

  • Authentic Thai village feel – Low-rise buildings, traditional roofs, and small walkways between the villas. It feels like a tropical village, not a big resort.
  • The garden – One of the most beautiful and well-kept in Hua Hin. Lush, colorful, and full of birdsong. Perfect for a peaceful morning walk with a cup of coffee.
  • The staff – Many of them have worked here for over 10 years. They know the place, they know the guests – and they always deliver.
  • The breakfast – Fresh fruit, eggs made to order, homemade bread, and plenty of Thai dishes. There’s always something new – and always something good.
  • Location – Just north of Hua Hin town, so it’s quiet but still just minutes from everything.

About the Beach – And Why It Still Works

Let’s be honest: the beach directly in front of Anantara is not the best in Hua Hin. It can be narrow and a bit rocky during high tide – especially compared to places like Khao Takiab or Sai Noi further south.

But – and this is a big butAnantara has designed a beautiful beachfront garden area instead. There you’ll find the most comfortable sun loungers imaginable, shaded by large palm trees, with sea views and no sand in your sandals.

It’s actually one of my favorite spots in Hua Hin to read a book. Close to the beach, but still in the peaceful oasis the hotel creates.

Who Is This Hotel For?

  • Couples looking for romance and tranquility
  • Families who want space and comfort in lush surroundings
  • Golfers with 5–6 golf courses within a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

My Recommendation

If you’re looking for a hotel in Hua Hin that combines true Thai charm with comfort, great food, and genuine service, then Anantara Hua Hin is still one of the best options out there. It’s not the newest resort in town – but it has something more important: soul.

And yes – we’re happy to help you book it, often at better rates than the booking sites and with way better service.
