Bangkok to Koh Tao by Train – The Scenic Way to the Islands

Want to get to the Thai islands in a more authentic, relaxed, and affordable way? The night train from Bangkok to Chumphon – and onward to Koh Tao, Koh Phangan or Koh Samui – is an unforgettable experience.

If you’re heading south from Bangkok and want something more than just a quick flight, this train-ferry combo is a fun alternative. It’s not just transport – it’s part of the adventure.

From Bangkok’s Hualamphong to Chumphon

You’ll board the night train at Bangkok’s old central station, Hualamphong (yes, it’s as chaotic and charming as it sounds). From Silom or Sukhumvit, a taxi to the station costs about 60 THB. Give yourself enough time – traffic can be crazy in the evening.

Most travelers choose the 19:30 departure heading south. The train leaves on time, and soon you’re rolling past Bangkok’s outskirts and into the countryside.

Onboard the night train

Shortly after departure, train staff transform the seats into sleeper bunks. You can order food to your seat or join fellow travellers in the dining car – where the atmosphere sometimes turns festive (yes, Singha is served).

At 11 PM the restaurant closes. You’ll fall asleep to the sound of the train rocking through the jungle.

Morning transfer to the ferry

Around 4:00 AM you’ll arrive in Chumphon. Not much to do here – but by 5:00, a modern bus arrives and takes you to the ferry terminal.

The high-speed catamaran departs at 7:00 AM:

  • Koh Tao arrival: 09:00 AM
  • Koh Phangan: around 10:45 AM
  • Koh Samui: around 12:00 noon

Bring snacks – proper breakfast options are limited before you reach the islands.

Travel tips

  • Book your train and ferry as a combo ticket – it’s easier and cheaper
  • Pre-book your hotel transfer on the island. Don’t start your holiday with a price negotiation
  • Keep passport and valuables on you during the night. Thailand’s trains are safe, but better safe than sorry

Bangkok to Koh Tao – worth it?

Absolutely. You’ll save money compared to flying, and you’ll experience a part of Thai culture most tourists miss. The train is clean, safe and social – and the ferry views are unforgettable.
